I am a college student at Rutgers, New Jersey and I am currently writing on a research paper regarding the influences and underlying reasons for the massive attraction towards Yaoi manga of both men and women.

Of course I, myself am also a lover of Yaoi and BL manga, that is why I am conducting a survey to know what everybody else thinks! Kind of hard to answer this. I got into yaoi because of fanfiction really. So male characters that are originally not in a romantic/sexual relationship are written as such. You see so much of "something" between male interactions in the original context and if one of them was a girl, it would be so obvious they would be together and such. But to put them together even thought they're both males feels almost forbidden, and also adds excitement to the idea.

But a more general answer is that there that whole "romantic" concept to yaoi. Not the generic one of romance and flowers, but rather the fantasy ideal. Most often than not, the issues in a yaoi story isn't how society would deal with homosexuals, but rather is contained within the relationship: "does he love me", "am I only his sex toy", "am I too rough", "will having sex to soon make him hate me", "will he think I'm a slut", etc. It's pretty much the same scenarios in a heterosexual relationship, except it's two dudes, and it's nice to think that.

And I suppose there is a rather erotic sensation when imagining two men together. But types depend on your likings and such. Some people like two pretty boys, some people like two muscle men, and then there's everything in between and beyond.
