As for it keeping its originiality. The highlander anime is pretty great, I don't know if its story is considerd cannon or not but it seemed well done.
True, some anime can be damn awesome, like Akira. It's supposed to take place between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, so it likely will be much darker than something shown on The WB. Also, release date is said to be 2-4 weeks before The Dark Knight comes out....so mebbeh I can find it online somewhere to watch and hopefully it won't bastardize the series.
