Haibane Renmei The Diamond in The Rough
As many of you noticed the newer animes coming out are really starting to suffer from mediocrity. They have become shamelessly cliche'd and irrelevent. Im sure all you are tired of watching the hyper main character, the "Cool" "Jerk" rival, and the same old story and concepts. Well I started out watching animes like dbz, then naruo, then rurouni kenshin, then inuyasha.. i thought that ohh they are popular, which would usually mean they're good right?? well after watching stuff like death note, full metal alchemist, beck, and eureka 7 i really seen the division in quality and motives in these animes. So a long time ago i sought out a anime that just isn't like the others.. and i definately found it. Haibane Renmei was what I found and I just want to make sure that everyone else experiences it. It is about a girl name rakka, who is awaken into a strange place without any memory of her past life. The story goes on about her and her friends everyday life, and thats the description without any detail whatsoever. This anime makes you think because it doesnt give you any straight answers about its secrets. The anime doesn't treat you like a mindless idiot. It's Light Hearted, with it's share of darkness. You will grow to love every character. So this is definately a hidden great, and should definately be checked out, (12 episodes).
If you have trouble finding it a quick search on veoh would work.

This is actually one of my favorite anime. It was very touching, especially in the end, and each episodes does make me think. Hmm, although I must say that this particular anime has its share of symbols regarding real-life experiences and the cycle that we all go through. The setting and story in this anime is also very unique and certainly one of a kind, but I think I have an idea where that fits in my own life since it is truly one of those anime that makes me reflect on a lot of things.
And I absolutely love the opening song for this. "Free Bird" has excellent instrumentals. I especially look forward to the cello part.

I was going to mention the freebird thing but i somehow doubted anyone else would like it. Thankfully someone else did. Such a breath of fresh air it is, i definately listened to it at the start of every episode. Thanks for helping me spread the word.

I like this series a lot. It is very different from most anime I have seen. I loved the mystery that surrounded the story.
I wouldn't recommend it for everyone though. For people that need extreme anime action, they will probably not enjoy this too much XD. I would also recommend it more to an older audience and I can see younger watchers becoming impatient.

This was a really great series, and almost had a sense of 'slice of life' feel to it. It wasn't so overly dramatic or cliche like most animes, and even though the anime itself wasn't realistic, it was done in a way that made it easy to relate to the characters.
It was a great anime, and had some surprisingly dark undertones to it. It was still touching in the end.

I watched Haibane a good 4 years ago, and I still really love it. Not only its difference, from other anime, but the beauty of it.

I love this series too, and Ko Otani's music makes this show come alive.

I really enjoyed this series too...
And Free Bird is quite possibly my favourite track from any anime! Especially the part between 1:35ish and 1:50.
Anyway, back to the series...
I agree that if anyone's looking for something different they should watch this. It's very artistic, and a beautiful anime full of enchanting characters, and one of the sweetest protaganists I've come across. The ending, with Rakka and Reki, is particularly satisfying, and you see a deeper, shadowed side to Reki, which makes you realise how complex the characters are. The timing of discovery is parciularly well done.
Mm, I feel like watching this again now!
