In truth, they're supposed to be 'shards' of Sephiroth's will made into flesh. Thus why Kadaj at the end just 'evaporated'; he's just Lifestream that's controlled by a very powerful spirit. However, in this case, that spirit was unable to become a whole, thus the 3 Remnants. Each Remnant embodies something of Sephiroth.
I completely forgot what they were exactly, but I only remembered one: Loz was supposed to be the embodiement of Sephiroth's masculinity.
Now doesn't THAT tells us something about Sephiroth?! LMAO. He's such a pansy.
Geostigma, right. Anyways, ya'll remember the part of the game, in the big flashback in the Lifestream? Okay, remember the part where Cloud gets stabbed by Sepansy--I mean, Sephiroth? Good. Cloud lifts Sephiroth and throws him into the Mako below, right?
Okay, now that we've got that established, I would like to say that the material Sephiroth ceased to exist after that point. All the times you see Sephiroth in the game isn't really Sephiroth. It's actually Jenova's body, which Sephiroth is controlling. Well, if his body is gone, he should be dead, right?
Wrong. His will was so strong that his.... spirit? soul? whatever, continued to exist in the lifstream. He became a conciouss, nothing more. But he could control Jenova's body and make it shape-change to look like him.
What's this to do with Geostigma? I'm getting there, keep your pants on.
So, anywho, in the very end of the game, Cloud defeats the 'conciouss' form of Sephiroth. Well, oh crap for Sephy. See, this is were the 'spirit' of Sephiroth is shattered, resulting in the three-way split we see in AC. Sephiroth's will is still so strong that it colaces into a material form, even if shattered. Cool huh?
Moving on....
Well, when Sephiroth and Cloud & co. fought in the Northern Crater, they were in the Lifestream. So, when Jenova's body was defeated, all those cells spread throughout the lifestream. A part of Sephiroth's will later uses those cells to attack humans. Children are a prime target because they were just recently endowed with the life-giving powers of the Lifestream. The other prime targets are any 'sephiroth-clones' of which there is only one, Cloud. The rest were killed off.
See, Cloud was experimented on by Shinra, and had Jenova cells injected into him. This makes it doubly easier for him to get Getostigma because the cells are already inside him! Creepy.
Anyways, these alien cells set to work attacking the body. It's sorta like when a baby is born with a different blood type than the mother. See, after going so long with one kind of blood (the mother's) the baby's body doesn't recognize it's own blood. And so it attacks its blood. This is quite fatal. Well, the same kind of situation here. The body is trying to eliminate the Jenova cells, but is only attacking itself. Meanwhile, the Jenova cells are making the body confuse itself with a foreign substance! It's pretty clever really.
Anyways, that's my opinion on Geostigma.
Okay, dude, you're going too far. Either post something relevant to the thread or hold your tongue. United 93 was a very well done movie and was very emotional for many people. For you to describe it as such is insulting, and I ask you to please not do that again.

You gave a nice history of how you think Geostigma works (basically the same explanation SE gave), but what's your opinion of it? How well do you think it works as an element of the FFVII world?

Oh, well, I think it played out pretty well. We definitely had to see what'd become of the chars afterwards, so AC was a must-have IMO. Geostigma actually went int quite nicely, for being a completley new idea.
they should've just explained what they hell it was and all first.

Yep, I think Geostigma was a great idea too. But of course they couldn't explain it all in AC; how else would they sucker us consumers into buying all the para-accessories?

Geostigma was probably the only really good bit to AC plot. It showed that though not physically whole, Sephiroth and Jenova can still exist in some form and keep influence in the planet. A being such as Jenova cannot be merely defeated by swords and guns (and hairpins) yet could wreck havoc from within at a cellular level. Geostigma was a real crisis for the Planet and its inhabitance and its concept followed up the original game well. Reading the Case of Denzel story to have everything fit is a good idea.
As for the other parts of AC such as the Remnants, Cloud being emo, and worst of all RUFUS! (you cunts SE!) just wasn't cool. Also where the hell is Jonny? he could at least have a cameo role!

I think you could say that about Advent Children in general except for the Geostigma and its affiliated elements (theme of infection, Denzel, etc.). But to each his own, I suppose - but it still makes me sad that some people think AC is just as good as the game.

you know you people seem to be leaving out that at the end of FF7 Sephiroth first form had an attack called Geostigma that gave a lot of damage and cast poison on the party

Whats sadder is that there are people who think AC IS the game
